From First Seedling to Full Harvest

BCH Appie began as a small backyard experiment in Mumbai and grew into a structured learning platform for home orchardists across India. Each phase shaped the way we teach apple cultivation in warm climates.

2019 — First Test Plot Planted 12 Anna and Dorsett Golden trees on a rented plot in Nashik to study chill hour behaviour in low-elevation conditions.
2020 — Grafting Workshops Ran the first hands-on grafting sessions with 40 local gardeners, comparing T-budding and cleft grafting on seedling rootstock.
2021 — Drip Irrigation Guide Published a field-tested drip schedule for water-scarce months, cutting orchard water use by nearly a third in trial plots.
2022 — Pest Management Module Launched an integrated pest management course covering codling moth traps, neem sprays, and beneficial insect habitats.
2023 — Community Forums Opened regional discussion boards where growers in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Punjab share seasonal observations and photos.
2024 — Recipe Collection Added a cooking section with 30 apple-based recipes, from chutneys to baked treats, using fruit from member orchards.

From a Backyard Plot to a Growing Orchard Community

BCH Appie began in 2019 as a small experiment: a handful of apple saplings planted in a Mumbai backyard, tested against the subtropical heat. What started as a personal challenge quickly turned into a shared knowledge base for neighbours and local gardeners who wanted the same results.

Today the platform brings together urban growers, small farmers, and horticulture students across India, with field-tested guides on grafting, pruning, and pest control that work in real home conditions.

2019

First Trial Plot

We planted twelve heat-tolerant varieties on a rented patch in Mumbai. Only five survived the first monsoon, but those five taught us more than any textbook about drainage, soil pH, and shade management.

2020

Community Workshops Begin

After sharing our pruning calendar online, we started free weekend workshops. Attendance grew from eight neighbours to over sixty participants within three months, many bringing cuttings from their own trees.

2021

Grafting Exchange Network

We launched a scion exchange program connecting growers in different climate zones. This simple swap of graftwood helped members find rootstocks that actually survived their local conditions.

2022

Drip Irrigation Field Trials

Partnering with two small farms in Nashik, we tested low-cost drip kits designed for home orchards. Water use dropped by nearly half, and fruit set improved noticeably in the dry season.

2023

Recipe Section Launched

With harvests coming in, members started sharing apple chutneys, baked goods, and preserves. The recipe archive now holds over forty tested dishes that use fresh, homegrown fruit.

2024

Regional Care Calendars

We published month-by-month care guides tailored to five distinct Indian climate zones, from the Himalayan foothills to the Deccan plateau, based on three years of member observations.

Who we are

Rooted in practical orchard knowledge

BCH Appie is a community-driven platform for home growers and small-scale farmers across India who want to master apple cultivation in subtropical and temperate climates. We combine field-tested guidance, seasonal calendars, and peer exchange to help you turn a modest backyard into a productive orchard.

01

For home growers

Practical guidance for small spaces

We focus on container orchards, courtyard trees, and compact rootstocks that suit urban and semi-urban plots. Every recommendation respects the constraints of limited space and warm-season humidity.

02

For smallholder farmers

Yield-focused, climate-aware advice

Our variety selection guides and drip irrigation plans are built for growers who need reliable harvests without heavy chemical inputs. We emphasise low-cost interventions that protect both the crop and the soil.

03

For curious cooks

From orchard to kitchen

Fresh apples deserve more than a snack bowl. Our recipe section turns your harvest into chutneys, baked goods, and preserves that make the most of seasonal fruit.

04

For the community

Shared experience, honest exchange

Forums and monthly care calendars keep the conversation alive between seasons. You will find growers who have dealt with the same pests, the same soil, and the same monsoon surprises.
