From a Backyard Plot to a Growing Orchard Community
BCH Appie began in 2019 as a small experiment: a handful of apple saplings planted in a Mumbai backyard, tested against the subtropical heat. What started as a personal challenge quickly turned into a shared knowledge base for neighbours and local gardeners who wanted the same results.
Today the platform brings together urban growers, small farmers, and horticulture students across India, with field-tested guides on grafting, pruning, and pest control that work in real home conditions.
2019First Trial Plot
We planted twelve heat-tolerant varieties on a rented patch in Mumbai. Only five survived the first monsoon, but those five taught us more than any textbook about drainage, soil pH, and shade management.
2020Community Workshops Begin
After sharing our pruning calendar online, we started free weekend workshops. Attendance grew from eight neighbours to over sixty participants within three months, many bringing cuttings from their own trees.
2021Grafting Exchange Network
We launched a scion exchange program connecting growers in different climate zones. This simple swap of graftwood helped members find rootstocks that actually survived their local conditions.
2022Drip Irrigation Field Trials
Partnering with two small farms in Nashik, we tested low-cost drip kits designed for home orchards. Water use dropped by nearly half, and fruit set improved noticeably in the dry season.
2023Recipe Section Launched
With harvests coming in, members started sharing apple chutneys, baked goods, and preserves. The recipe archive now holds over forty tested dishes that use fresh, homegrown fruit.
2024Regional Care Calendars
We published month-by-month care guides tailored to five distinct Indian climate zones, from the Himalayan foothills to the Deccan plateau, based on three years of member observations.
